According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Resident Surgeon Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman of the NIBPS confirmed that “two more burn victims, out of 26, undergoing treatment at the burn institute were released today.” With the release of these two patients, the institute has now discharged a total of 14 burn survivors.

The discharged victims are identified as Yusha, a 9-year-old student of the Milestone School and College, and Sumaiya Lorin, a 40-year-old teacher from the same institution. Dr. Shawon also mentioned that 24 burn victims remain under treatment, with two in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and one of them on life support.

Out of the 24 patients still receiving care, 22 are children-comprising 15 girls and 8 boys-while the remaining two are adult females. Seven of the patients have inhalation injuries, and five have sustained burns over 30 percent of their bodies. Eighteen of the injured are being treated in different wards within the institute.

Dr. Shawon disclosed that a total of 215 surgeries, both small and large, have been performed on the fire victims. Tragically, 18 victims have succumbed to their injuries at the institute, with an additional fatality occurring at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

The incident occurred on July 21 when a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into a two-storey building of the Milestone School and College due to a mechanical fault shortly after takeoff. The crash has resulted in 33 confirmed deaths, including that of the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam.
