Lalmonirhat: Speakers at a views-exchange meeting emphasized the complementary relationship between democracy and good governance, highlighting the media’s pivotal role in establishing both. They shared these insights during a meeting titled ‘Role of Media in Establishing Democracy and Good Governance,’ held at the Aditmari upazila parishad conference room in Lalmonirhat district.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Rangpur Regional Information Office of PID organized the meeting specifically for local journalists. Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bidhan Kanti Halder attended as the chief guest, while Information Officer of Rangpur Regional Information Office Md Farhad Ahmed chaired the event. Assistant Information Officer Ayesha Siddika also addressed the gathering, which was moderated by Assistant Information Officer Md Rupal Mia.

The chief guest underscored the media’s role as the fourth pillar of the state, crucial for establishing transparency and accountability in government activities. He stated, “The general people can know through the media how and to what extent government policies and activities are being implemented.” He further noted the impossibility of establishing democracy without media and the necessity of good governance to strengthen democratic structures.

Farhad Ahmed echoed these sentiments, stating that an independent, objective, and responsible media acts as a bridge between the government and the people. He remarked, “The media creates awareness against several inconsistencies, corruption, and irregularities in society, which is crucial for good governance.”

Journalists at the event urged the interim government to close down unregistered media outlets promptly and advocated for the enactment of a Journalist Protection Act to ensure the safety of journalists in their professional work.
