Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today emphasized the growing influence of mass media and social media in shaping public mindsets, highlighting the critical challenge of establishing ethical control over these platforms. Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of six short-term courses at the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute, he underscored the pivotal role these media play in modern society.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister remarked on people’s natural tendency to trust and believe information from influential individuals, which allows these figures to significantly impact public thinking. While acknowledging the potential positive influence of this power, he cautioned against its misuse, pointing out the substantial responsibility borne by those in media, film, and creative sectors. The failure to maintain ethical and professional standards, he warned, could render these powerful platforms detrimental to society.
The minister further elaborated on the government’s efforts to modernize and expand creative and training institutions to enhance their effectiveness. Highlighting the profound impact of cinema, he described films as a medium capable of evoking deep emotional responses and urged stakeholders to harness this influence for the betterment of humanity and civilization.
He also advised course participants to balance ethical values and responsibility with technical expertise. Following the programme, the minister inaugurated the six short-term courses and expressed gratitude to all involved.
The event, chaired by Chief Executive Officer of the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute Abu Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin, featured addresses from Director General of the National Institute of Mass Communication Mohammad Hiruzzaman, Bangladesh Betar Director General ASM Zahid, Chairperson of Film and Television Department of Jagannath University Dr. Shah Md. Nister Jahan Kabir, and Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board SM Abdur Rahman.
