Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee today highlighted the significant challenges posed by the absence of party symbols in the upcoming local government elections. He emphasized the importance of electing honest, capable, and pro-people representatives, pointing out that vigilance is necessary to select suitable candidates for public office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these comments while serving as the chief guest at a prize distribution ceremony for an annual sports competition at Haji Fateh Mohammadia Dakhil Madrasa in Dighli Union under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila. He stressed that candidates intending to contest elections must be dedicated to serving the public and maintaining a people-oriented approach.
Reflecting on past experiences, Anee noted that the absence of elected representatives at the grassroots level over the last 17 years had led to various challenges in local governance. He
also warned party leaders and activists about the potential risks of fielding multiple candidates from the same party, which could weaken electoral prospects and be detrimental to the party’s success.
The minister mentioned that Union Parishad elections could be announced at any moment and stressed that good representatives contribute to a better society, whereas self-serving leadership creates difficulties for the people. He urged all concerned to remain alert and responsible in this regard.
Golam Sarwar, President of Haji Fateh Mohammadia Dakhil Madrasa, presided over the event. The ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Vice President of Bangladesh Football Federation Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, Assistant Private Secretary to Water Resources Minister Jamshed Alam Rana, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kathowai Pru Marma, and BNP Joint Convener of Lakshmipur district Advocate Hafiz Ullah.
