Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that instructions have been given to arrest the killers of a freedom fighter and his wife in Rangpur soon. 'The concerned authorities have been instructed to arrest the killers quickly and bring them to justice,' he added. The adviser made these remarks while responding to media queries after the 17th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order, held in the conference room of the Home Ministry at Bangladesh Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the murdered couple are the parents of two colleagues-one in the police and another in the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Consequently, authorities have been ordered to expedite the arrest of the perpetrators. Jahangir noted that serious discussions were held regarding security issues at the July Museum, soon to be opened at Sher-e-Banglanagar, to ensure safe movement for visitors. Addressing questions about the recovery of looted weapons, the adviser mentioned that 'the process is ongoing.'
In response to inquiries on election preparedness and the creation of a level playing field, Chowdhury emphasized the government's commitment to holding a free and fair election. He highlighted that all preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections are in place, which include comprehensive training for law enforcement agencies, procurement of body-worn cameras, and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply at polling stations. 'Training is essential for smooth implementation of any preparation. There is no alternative to training,' he stated, noting that the training programs for law enforcement officers will be completed by next January.
The adviser also mentioned that the Election Commission has announced changes to voting hours for the upcoming election. 'Polling will now run from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm-an extension of one hour. Due to the extended time, vote counting may continue after sunset, so alternative management of electricity is crucial at every polling center to ensure voting is not hampered by power outages,' he explained.
The briefing was attended by Special Assistant to the Principal Adviser on Home Affairs Md. Md. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, among others.
