Dhaka: Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid today emphasized the urgent need to boost multi-sectoral initiatives to mitigate the effects of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and prevent premature deaths nationwide. Recognizing the gravity of the issue, he noted that a Joint Declaration focusing on the prevention and control of NCDs has been signed with 35 ministries and departments.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rashid made these remarks during the third-phase meeting dedicated to formulating an action plan to implement the Joint Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized the meeting with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO). The discussion took place at the Cabinet Division's conference room at the secretariat.
As the chief guest, Dr. Rashid pointed out the lack of sufficient playgrounds in the country and stressed the importance of increasing opportunities for sports and physical activities as an integral part of NCD prevention strategies. He also proposed offering tax exemptions to institutions such as clubs and gymnasiums that contribute to enhancing public health services.
Dr. Rashid further highlighted the need to concentrate on accident-prone areas to diminish accidents and related casualties. The meeting was chaired by Health Services Division Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman and was attended by secretaries from relevant ministries and divisions, the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, senior officials from the Health Services Division, and representatives from WHO.
