DHAKA- Journalists leaders at a discussion here yesterday demanded of the government for immediate announcement of the 9th Wage Board for enhancement of salary scales for journalists.
They said journalists' community have been passing their days with inhuman condition due to financial insolvency as the government is yet to format of the 9th Wage Board.
"The living standard of journalists went intolerable condition," the journalists leaders told a discussion at Journalists' Union Office at Jatiya Press Club here.
The discussion was jointly arranged by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) marking the May Day.
PM's Media Affairs Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury addressed the function as the chief guest with BFUJ President Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul in the chair.
DUJ general secretary Shohel Haidar Chowdhury moderated the discussion, while BFUJ secretary general Omar Faruque, vice president of Jatiya Press Club Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, general secretary of Jatiya Press Club Farida Yeasmin, DUJ president Shaban Mahmud, BFUJ former secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DRU vice president Ataur Rahman Chowdhury, BFUJ joint secretary general Amio Ghatak Pulak, BFUJ former treasurers Ataur Rahman and Khairuzzaman Kamal, DUJ former general secretary Kuddus Afrad, journalist leaders Mrinal Chakraborty, Siddiqur Rahman and Mafizur Rahman Khan Babu also spoke.
Journalists have been facing harassment in different ways like termination by their owners without salary and other allowances, the journalists leaders said.
Owners of media houses also did not pay salary even years after years to journalists and humiliated them economically and socially, they added.
Referring to the significance of May Day, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said journalists would have to be united for realising wage board along with other demands. BFUJ president expected that the 9th Wage Board for journalists would be formed very soon, adding, "The names of journalists' as member of the wage board have already been sent and the wage board would be announced after getting owner's names."
