Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami has presented their opinions on proposed key reforms to the National Consensus Commission.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this submission is part of an initiative by the current interim government, which has established the seven-member commission, led by chief adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, to evaluate and implement recommendations from six significant reform commissions.
A delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami, led by its secretary general and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Parwar, submitted their opinions to Professor Dr Ali Riaz, vice president of the National Consensus Commission, at the commission’s Sangsad Bhaban office. The delegation included Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad, as well as central executive council member and central publicity and media cell secretary Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda.
The Jamaat leaders put forward their proposals on five key issues: the constitution, elections, judiciary, public administration, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Professor Mia Golam Parwar emphasized the importance of reforms for conducting a free, fair, and neutral election, indicating that Jamaat leaders, including its Ameer, are advocating for a timely and meaningful election following the completion of necessary reforms.
Furthermore, the interim government has suggested a timeframe for the elections, to which the Jamaat’s secretary general acknowledged without objection. He noted that while they have not agreed with the commission on all issues, many points of consensus were reached, and their detailed proposals were submitted with comprehensive explanations. They stressed the importance of a proportional representation electoral system and expressed hope that the interim government will proceed with preparations for a meaningful election post-reforms.
