Dhaka:Authorities at Jahangirnagar University have initiated steps to establish a horn-free zone around the female residential halls to mitigate noise pollution and foster a better study environment for students.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md Nurul Islam, announced that the institution has engaged with government authorities to place 'No Horn' signs at intervals along the Dhaka-Aricha highway near the female residential halls.

During a visit to Fazilatunnesa Hall, accompanied by university officials and a team from the Department of Environment, Dr. Islam assessed the noise pollution levels affecting the halls. Students expressed concerns that the proximity of the newly constructed female residential halls to the highway results in frequent disruptions from vehicle honking.

The university has coordinated with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, leading to today's visit by a Department of Environment team to examine the noise pollution in the affected areas. In addition to signage, the university plans to plant trees along the boundary wall adjacent to the highway to further reduce noise levels.

Furthermore, Dr. Islam stated that Green Clubs would be established in each residential hall to promote student involvement in keeping the campus clean and green. Following the hall visits, the university and Department of Environment representatives conducted an inspection along the Dhaka-Aricha highway to evaluate the noise situation.

The visiting delegation included several university officials and Department of Environment representatives, such as JU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Md Shamsul Alam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md Sohel Rana, and others. Hall wardens, superintendents, and media representatives were also in attendance.
