Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has called for more cooperation from the US in Bangladesh’s security sector. He made the request during a courtesy call of the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Megan Bouldin, at his ministry office in Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest, including law and order and security issues between the two countries, counter-terrorism, prosecution of cases, and prevention of online sexual harassment of young women. At the beginning of the meeting, the Adviser welcomed the Ambassador and noted that the US is a close ally of Bangladesh.
The Adviser highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two nations in counter-terrorism and security. He acknowledged that with training and equipment support from the United States, it has been possible to modernize and enhance the capabilities of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Jahangir expressed his gratitude to the Charge d’Affaires for the ongoing assistance and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in the future.
Expressing her commitment to cooperation in the security sector of Bangladesh, the Charge d’Affaires stated that every country faces risks related to terrorism and militant attacks, and Bangladesh is no exception. In response, the Home Adviser assured that law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh are on high alert to tackle terrorism and any form of crime.
Jahangir mentioned that special security measures have been implemented for the Baridhara diplomatic area of Dhaka, with the Coast Guard deployed alongside regular security forces. The Charge d’Affaires expressed her gratitude for these measures and stressed the significance of mutual communication, coordination, and information sharing among relevant agencies to ensure the safety and security of any country.
The meeting was attended by Khandaker Md. Mahabubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Political and ICT) of the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry, Eric Geelan, Political and Economic Counselor of the US Embassy, and Josh Pope, Political Military Affairs Officer, among others.
