Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood has directed the relevant organizations to draft a working paper aimed at upgrading the country’s electricity transmission and distribution systems. This initiative is a pivotal step in readying Bangladesh for entering the nuclear power era.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the directive was issued during a review meeting attended by the chairmen and managing directors of transmission and distribution organizations under the Power Division. The meeting, held in the ministry’s conference room, focused on evaluating the current electricity infrastructure’s capacity and identifying potential challenges in introducing nuclear power.
The minister highlighted the necessity of overcoming challenges associated with nuclear power and stressed the importance of timely preparation. He proposed the establishment of a National Research Center to ensure that the electricity system is both safe and modern.
Iqbal emphasized that nuclear power is a highly technology-driven sector, necessitating comprehensive preparations before its implementation. Power Grid Bangladesh PLC has been tasked with conducting necessary studies and preparing a concept paper, which will be reviewed by international consultants with expertise in nuclear power. Their recommendations will guide the modernization of the country’s transmission and distribution systems.
He further noted that Bangladesh is diversifying its energy mix, transitioning from gas-based electricity generation to include coal, solar, and nuclear energy. Effective coordination between transmission and distribution systems is essential to avoid system failures, which have been a risk due to inadequate past coordination.
To address these concerns, initiatives are underway to develop the necessary preparedness and smart infrastructure. The minister instructed Power Grid Bangladesh PLC’s chief engineer and related officials to develop a detailed concept and working paper on smart grid systems, promising prompt submission of an action plan and proposals.
Iqbal underscored the importance of nuclear power for the country’s energy security, given its technological complexity. He assured that public safety remains a top priority and informed attendees that unnecessary projects in the power sector have been pinpointed for investigation to ensure accountability.
The meeting concluded with the minister urging all stakeholders to work with dedication and professionalism for the power sector’s advancement. Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Engineer Md. Rezaul Karim and Power Grid Bangladesh PLC chief engineer Md. Monzurul Islam briefed the minister on the sector’s current capacity and progress in development activities. Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh was also present.
