Dhaka: BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today emphasized the urgent need to curb the misdeeds and extremism of religious groups to prevent a potential democratic crisis in the country. He warned that if unchecked, these extremist elements, along with defeated fascist forces, could undermine democracy once again.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman made these remarks during a virtual address at a pre-iftar event organized in honor of BNP politicians at the Ladies Club in Eskaton. He stressed the importance of resisting such extremist forces to preserve the country’s non-communal democratic character. He also highlighted the necessity of empowering people politically and economically to maintain a strong and sustainable political process. Tarique Rahman reiterated that the interim government should prioritize holding elections to establish a democratic government accountable to the people.
During the event, Tarique Rahman called for unity among freedom-loving people to thwart any conspiracies. He also expressed concern over the rising incidents of oppression and rape of women and children, stating that the country cannot progress while half of its population remains insecure.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also spoke at the event, mentioning the formation of the National Consensus Commission and the distribution of reform proposals to political parties. He urged a thorough review of these proposals to align with the national history, culture, and tradition of Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of the 1971 liberation war.
Other notable speakers included LDP Chairman Oli Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami Naib-e-Amir Abdullah Md. Taher, and National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam. Nahid criticized Mujibism and the Awami League, asserting that they would not have a place in future political elections in Bangladesh. He emphasized the need for a political consensus on the ongoing trial process.
