Dhaka: State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit highlighted the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) as a model for maximising the use of limited resources to enhance productivity and capacity in national institutions. He addressed this during the 'Bangladesh FETP Conference 2026' at the IEDCR auditorium in Mohakhali.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the conference, titled 'Strengthening Field Epidemiology Practice', was a collaborative effort by IEDCR and the Field Epidemiology Training Program, Bangladesh (FETP,B), with backing from SAFETYNET, EMPHNET, UNICEF, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr Muhit commended IEDCR's contributions to training and capacity building for Bangladesh's epidemiological workforce, particularly through its successful Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP).
Dr Muhit emphasised the importance of enhancing the skills of young researchers and experts, mentioning discussions held with the Prime Minister and the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) about developing a skilled workforce in Bangladesh. He noted that despite the presence of good training institutions, limited resources are not fully utilised due to a lack of coordination and planning, and suggested that IEDCR could set a benchmark in this area.
At the conference, Dr Muhit praised the scientific posters and research papers that met international standards, focusing on real issues in Bangladesh and the health risks faced by its population. He encouraged young researchers and scientists to use the knowledge gained and cooperation fostered at the event to drive more effective public health research in the country.
The programme was chaired by IEDCR Director Dr Quazi Ahmed Zaki and Scientific Committee Chairman Dr SM Baki Billah, with representatives from various partner organisations also speaking at the event.
