Dhaka: United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has raised concerns regarding the dissemination of disinformation aimed at destabilizing Bangladesh, as revealed by foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain during a media briefing. The briefing took place at Hotel InterContinental in the capital, where both Guterres and Hossain addressed the press.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adviser Hossain highlighted Guterres’ recognition of the challenges associated with the reform process necessary for conducting free and fair elections in Bangladesh. The UN Secretary-General assured full support and commitment from the United Nations towards these reforms under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Hossain emphasized Guterres’ pledge to assist the interim government and the people of Bangladesh, stating that the UN’s backing would facilitate a successful transition to democracy, reflecting the aspirations of the Bangladeshi populace. Guterres also engaged with various groups, including youth, civil societies, and Reform Commissions, to better understand the future aspirations of the people.
The adviser noted the significant contribution of these groups in shaping the July Charter, a comprehensive blueprint for Bangladesh’s democratic transition. The charter focuses on reforms across political, judicial, electoral, administrative, anti-corruption, and police sectors.
Hossain remarked on the symbolic significance of Guterres’ Ramadan Solidarity Visit, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations. This visit also allowed Guterres to witness firsthand the transformative stage of a new Bangladesh emerging from the July-August mass uprising.
During his visit, Guterres traveled to Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, expressing solidarity with the displaced population. He committed to advocating for their dignified repatriation to Myanmar, ensuring their security and rights. Guterres also participated in an iftar with over one hundred thousand Rohingya individuals, alongside the Chief Adviser, marking a historic gesture of solidarity.
