Dhaka: The government has announced a plan to supply an additional 250 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (mmcfd) to industries that are experiencing reduced output due to a significant shortfall in gas supply. This decision was reached during a special meeting held in the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, chaired by Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting concluded that 150 mmcfd of gas will be reallocated from the power sector, while an additional 100 mmcfd will be acquired through the importation of four extra LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) cargoes. The import of these cargoes is estimated to cost Tk. 2800 crore and will be conducted over the May-August period as an immediate measure.

At present, Petrobangla supplies approximately 2790 mmcfd of gas through a combination of local field production and imported LNG, against a demand of 3800 mmcfd. Of the total supply, around 1,862 mmcfd is sourced from local fields, and 928 mmcfd is obtained from imported LNG, leaving a deficit of 1010 mmcfd.
