Dhaka: The government has decided to forego decorative illumination across the country for this year’s Independence Day celebrations as part of austerity measures, amid looming concerns of an energy crisis, as announced by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Home Minister Ahmed shared this decision during a briefing with reporters at the Secretariat following a preparatory meeting focused on law and order in anticipation of Eid-ul-Fitr, the observance of Genocide Day on March 25, and the celebration of Independence and National Day on March 26. The decision aims to prevent any potential energy shortages and promote electricity conservation given the current situation.

Salahuddin Ahmed also highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure security and order during the upcoming national events and the Eid festival. Comprehensive security arrangements are being made for all state programs on Independence Day, including the ceremonial wreath-laying by the President and Prime Minister at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.

The Home Minister emphasized the importance of facilitating smooth travel for citizens during the Eid holidays. Relevant authorities have been tasked with ensuring uninterrupted road transport, enabling people to travel comfortably. Coordination with leaders of the BGMEA and BKMEA is ongoing to prevent unrest related to the wages and allowances of garment workers ahead of Eid.

To bolster Eid preparations, the Additional Inspector General of the Industrial Police has been designated as the focal point for enhancing coordination. This official will maintain continuous communication with both factory owners and workers’ representatives to prevent any untoward incidents before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Addressing recent isolated incidents of mob violence, Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the government is addressing these issues seriously and is committed to eradicating mob culture in the country. He noted that suspects involved in a recent crime in Narsingdi were swiftly apprehended, and police are diligently investigating other incidents with the necessary attention.
