Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today announced that the government is maintaining vigilance over the Awami League’s (AL) international engagements, as the party’s operations remain prohibited within the country. ‘We are monitoring what they are doing abroad,’ Alam stated in response to inquiries from journalists regarding the functioning of AL’s office in Kolkata. He was speaking at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the press conference was convened in light of the Chief Adviser’s impending visit to Malaysia. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is set to depart for Malaysia on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Alam emphasized that the government is vigilant about any overseas activities by AL that could potentially trigger unrest within Bangladesh. He assured that any specific information on such activities would be disclosed.
Addressing a separate query concerning the introduction of body-worn cameras during elections, Alam elucidated that these technologically advanced devices, equipped with AI, are intended to bolster security at voting centers. He noted that from a certain distance, Superintendents of Police (SP) or Officers-in-Charge (OCs) could effectively monitor the situation and swiftly address any disruptions.
Alam underscored the urgency of the matter, stating that the Chief Adviser has instructed the expedited procurement of these cameras. ‘Our goal is to ensure free and fair elections so that all citizens can vote enthusiastically. Therefore, we are purchasing these body-worn cameras so that we can ensure the security of 47,000 polling stations,’ he added.
The press conference was also attended by Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shah Asif Rahman and Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.
