Dhaka: The council of advisers today approved a significant proposal to recognize raw cotton as an agricultural product. This decision was announced by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy following the council’s meeting.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the move aims to facilitate easier access to agricultural loans for those interested in producing raw cotton locally. The meeting, presided over by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office, focused on promoting cotton production within the country.
Shafiqul Alam noted that the decision is part of a broader strategy to expand Bangladesh’s garments industry by encouraging local cotton production. This initiative is expected to provide significant benefits to the industry by reducing reliance on imported raw cotton.
Additionally, the council of advisers decided to cancel the proposal for forming a company named ‘Bangladesh Energy Port Limited (BEPL)’ under a public-private partnership in Chattogram.
