Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman announced that the government is committed to extending legal aid services directly to the people.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Asaduzzaman highlighted the inception of legal aid activities in Bangladesh in 1994 under the leadership of then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The initiative saw significant development when Prime Minister Tarique Rahman transformed an ordinance into the Legal Aid Act, recently passed in the current parliament session.

While inaugurating a mobile legal aid camp at the Korail slum in Dhaka, marking National Legal Aid Day, Asaduzzaman stressed the importance of bringing legal aid to marginalized communities. The initiative, organized by the Directorate of Bangladesh Legal Aid with technical support from the German development agency GIZ, aims to provide legal assistance across the country.

“The joint effort with the German government, providing both financial and technical support, is crucial in ensuring justice for the marginalized,” Asaduzzaman noted. He emphasized that the program aligns with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s ‘Bangladesh First’ initiative, extending its coverage to victims of political violence, persons with disabilities, and others burdened with legal cases.

Asaduzzaman further assured that the program would support families affected by the July Mass Uprising and relatives of martyrs, with a focus on protecting women and children. The initiative aims to reach those unable to seek legal help due to financial or social barriers, particularly victims of sexual violence.

The minister called on the media to disseminate information about the program, ensuring that marginalized individuals are informed of their rights and can access necessary support. During the event, he provided legal advice to residents of the Korail slum and addressed their concerns.

In conclusion, Asaduzzaman expressed gratitude to the German government for their partnership and expressed optimism that these collective efforts would contribute to building a just society.
