Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has revealed that the interim government has implemented a series of initiatives over the past year to transform Bangladesh Police into a pro-people and service-oriented force, inspired by the spirit of the July Mass Uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the measures are part of a broader effort to restore public confidence in the police following the ouster of the Awami League government. These initiatives aim to modernize and humanize law enforcement agencies, with a focus on accountability and community engagement. The establishment of an Independent National Police Commission and amendments to the Police Act-1861 are among the steps taken to meet public expectations.
In addition to police reforms, the government is working to enhance the operational capabilities of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) by incorporating advanced technologies such as drones and surveillance systems. Non-lethal weapons are also being supplied to BGB personnel, and existing Border Out Posts will be upgraded to deal with emergencies.
For Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force (VDP), policy reforms on responsibilities and duties are nearing completion, and digital infrastructure surveys are underway. Telemedicine services have been introduced to improve health care within the force.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) is also undergoing significant advancements, including the acquisition of high-speed boats, rescue drones, and helicopters. Enhanced communication systems have been installed to improve operations in the deep sea, and a project has been approved to build new patrol vessels domestically.
These comprehensive efforts by the interim government have contributed to the peaceful celebration of major national events and improved public perceptions of law enforcement agencies across the country.
