Benapole: Police today arrested Awami League (AL) Gopalganj district unit general secretary Shahabuddin Azam from the Benapole border while he was attempting to flee to India. Shahabuddin Azam, against whom several cases have been filed at Jathrabari Thana and various police stations in Gopalganj, was apprehended along with his wife. However, immigration police released his wife as there were no cases against her.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azam was subsequently handed over to the Benapole Port Police Station. This arrest follows a similar incident on June 5, when police detained Sheikh Rezaul Kabir, the former organizing secretary of the AL Mollarhat upazila unit in Bagerhat district, at the Benapole immigration checkpoint.
