G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit begins tomorrow in New Delhi

A two-day 9th G20 Parliamentary Speaker's Summit begins here tomorrow with the theme "Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally open the summit at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi around 11 am, official sources said.

Parliament of India under the broader framework of India's G20 Presidency is hosting the summit.

However, prior to the inauguration of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit, a pre-summit event namely the Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) was held today.

Apart from G-20 countries, 10 other specially invitee countries and international organizations will participate in the Summit, among others.

Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the summit.

The thematic sessions during this P20 Summit will focus on the following four subjects - Transformation in People's Lives through Public Digital Platforms; Women-led development; Accelerating SDGs; and Sustainable Energy Transition, said an official statement issued here today.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury held a meeting with Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the latter's office here today.

During the meeting, the Speakers of both the parliaments discussed issues relating to Bangladesh-India ties, their socio-economic and political conditions, P-20 summit, G-20 summit and Parliamentary Friendship Groups.

Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury stressed that the parliament members of Bangladesh and India can work together to tackle the adverse effects of climate change as socio-economic and political conditions of the both countries are almost similar.

Noting that as a delta, Bangladesh is the most affected by the adverse impact of climate change, she said, adding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken all necessary steps to combat this adverse effect.
