RANGPUR: Freelancer photographer Siyam Mian, son of Altaf Hossain from Lalpukur Noyapara in Kholeya union of Gangachara upazila, was murdered over financial disputes related to drug money.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swadhin Mian, arrested within 48 hours of the incident, confessed during preliminary interrogation that the motive behind the murder was to obtain money for drugs.
Swadhin Mian, the primary suspect, is the son of Anarul Islam from the nearby Ganjipur Majhpara village. Swadhin revealed to the police that Siyam, who captured photographs with his personal camera at the ‘Vinnojogot Entertainment Park’ and engaged in brick and sand trading at Kholeya Ganjipur market, had sold his camera for Taka 40,000 just days before the murder. Swadhin planned the murder to acquire this money.
On the night of October 27, at approximately 10:30 pm, Siyam was lured to the east bank of the Teesta Barrage Project’s canal embankment. There, Swadhin and his accomplices attacked Siyam, inflicting fatal i
njuries to his neck and head with a knife. Swadhin then used Siyam’s T-shirt to strangle him, ensuring his death. Following the murder, Swadhin fled with Taka 1,150, Siyam’s mobile phone, and his motorcycle.
The Rangpur Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Sharif Uddin, informed journalists that Swadhin Mian provided a confessional statement under section 164 in court. The court subsequently sent Swadhin to jail, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals implicated in the murder.
