Dhaka: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and freedom fighter Syed Sirajul Islam passed away on Monday. He was 75. Sirajul breathed his last at 9:30 am while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital, according to a press release from the Police Headquarters. He is survived by his wife, three sons, numerous admirers, and relatives.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sirajul will be laid to rest today in the family graveyard at Baliadanga village under Sadar Thana in Magura district. The funeral prayer, or namaj-e-janaja, was held at SI Shiru Mia Auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines at 10 am today. The IGP of Bangladesh Police, Baharul Alam, along with senior police officers, members, and relatives of the deceased participated in the janaja.
After the janaja, IGP Baharul Alam paid tribute by placing flowers on the coffin of the deceased. Leaders from the Bangladesh Police Service Association and Bangladesh Retired Police Officers Welfare Association also paid their respects with floral tributes. The deceased received an official funeral in honor of his service.
Late Syed Sirajul Islam embarked on his career with the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent in 1973. He held positions such as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rajshahi and Khulna Range and Police Commissioner of Rajshahi. He was noted for his diligence throughout his service. Born in 1949, Sirajul hailed from a respected Muslim family in Baliadanga village under Sadar Thana of Magura district.
