The foreign ministry has endorsed the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ decision to refrain from participating in the T20 World Cup in India, citing security issues highlighted by foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh has decided against traveling to India for the tournament due to potential security risks amid anti-Bangladesh activities and rhetoric from Hindutva groups. Concerns were raised about the safety of not only the cricket team but also the supporters who would travel to watch the matches. Md Touhid Hossain emphasized the difficulty in ensuring the safety of all involved, noting that it would be challenging for Indian agencies to guarantee adequate security.

The adviser expressed full support for a position previously stated by Adviser Asif Nazrul, pointing out the broader security concerns associated with sending the national team and its supporters to India. He stated that while an individ
ual cricketer might travel, the presence of a larger group presents a different level of risk. Consequently, the decision was made to participate in matches outside India.

Addressing questions about Bangladesh’s ongoing import of oil and rice from India, Touhid Hossain clarified that these imports are in the country’s interest, particularly when they are available at favorable prices. He stressed that ensuring the safety of Bangladeshi nationals remains a top priority.

Regarding visa issuance, the adviser mentioned that it is temporarily suspended at three Bangladesh mission offices in India due to security concerns. On the topic of purchasing fighter aircraft from Pakistan, he confirmed that discussions are still underway.

In conclusion, Md Touhid Hossain informed reporters of his scheduled departure to Saudi Arabia to attend a multilateral forum.
