Amman:Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized that uncertainty has become the new normal in the global economy. He discussed the importance of sound, evidence-based policymaking amidst sluggish global growth, high borrowing costs, and rising trade protectionism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks at the closing ceremony of 'EconThon 2026', a national inter-university economics competition. The event was organized by the Junior Economists Forum in collaboration with the Department of Economics at United International University (UIU).

Amir Khosru congratulated the competition finalists, stating that 224 teams from universities across the country had registered. Participants progressed through rounds of quizzes, case-solving, and policy-making exercises to reach the final stage.
He further discussed economic challenges such as rising energy prices, pressure on foreign exchange, climate change impacts, and inflation, all affecting people's purchasing power. He stressed the need for macroeconomic stability and tax system modernization to address these issues.
Minister Chowdhury also underscored the importance of transparency and effective use of taxpayers' money. He addressed students, urging them to blend professional skills with integrity and humanity, as no nation can progress without these qualities.
UIU Board of Trustees Chairman Hasan Mahmud Raja attended as the guest of honour, and UIU Board of Trustees member KMA Shamim was present as a special guest. The event was chaired by UIU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, and prizes were distributed to the winning teams.
