Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today accused the Awami League (AL) of distorting the history of Bangladesh’s independence and Liberation War for their own party interests. Rahman stated that a deposed and fugitive group has manipulated the historical narrative to politicize it and establish a new version of victory, undermining the true essence of the Liberation War.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking the Great Victory Day organized by the BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. The discussion was presided over by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and included speeches from BNP Standing Committee members.
Rahman highlighted that attempts to question the independence and Liberation War have persisted over time. He noted that while the conspirators have changed their appearance, their character remains unchanged. He emphasized that Bangladesh’s independence was achieved through the supreme sacrifice of millions of martyrs and the honor of countless mothers and sisters, a history well-documented in numerous writings.
Outlining a vision for the future, Rahman urged that the Victory Day pledge should focus on establishing a self-reliant, prosperous, and democratic Bangladesh. He stressed that independence and democracy require the political and economic empowerment of the people to stand on a sustainable foundation.
Rahman cited historical events, such as November 7, 1975, and August 5, 2024, to illustrate that whenever democracy has been threatened, independence and sovereignty have been endangered simultaneously. He argued that a strong state requires a government accountable to the people, chosen through direct popular vote.
Reaffirming BNP’s commitment to free and fair elections, Rahman accused a group of creating obstacles to the electoral process for their interests. He referenced ongoing conspiracies despite the Election Commission’s announcement of the national election date. He raised critical questions regarding the shooting of Osman Hadi and the potential beneficiaries of an interim government’s failure or a government in power without an election.
Rahman declared that attempts to intimidate freedom-loving and democracy-seeking individuals will not succeed. He called for unity and reliance on divine guidance to advance the movement for people’s rights, emphasizing that historical movements have proven the unstoppable power of united people.
Regarding the upcoming national election, Rahman described it as crucial, with implications for Bangladesh’s sovereignty, aspirations, and future generations. He laid out BNP’s goal of building a self-reliant and prosperous Bangladesh by engaging the nation’s diverse population, expressing hope for more meaningful future Victory Days.
Rahman extended greetings for the Great Victory Day to all citizens, irrespective of party affiliation or background, and sought public support in the upcoming election. He prayed for the martyrs’ souls and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
