Sunamganj: The repair and implementation of crop protection dams in the haor areas of Sunamganj district have officially commenced under the KABITA policy for the 2025-2026 financial year. This initiative aims to safeguard the boro crops spread across the region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the inauguration ceremony took place at Kalna Haor in the Sadar upazila, with Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia spearheading the launch. The project involves comprehensive repair and maintenance work on submerged dams across 137 haors, with an estimated total cost of Taka 103 crore.
The Water Development Board (WDB) has outlined that the project will cover the construction and renovation of approximately 590 kilometers of crop protection dams across 12 upazilas in the district. The execution of these extensive works will be managed by 510 Project Implementation Committees (PICs).
During the inauguration, Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia highlighted that the high water levels in some haor areas would prevent simultaneous commencement of dam work across all sites. "Work will begin in areas where the water level recedes first and will be completed on a priority basis," he stated. He further emphasized that PIC presidents have been directed to ensure the work is completed on time.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader, Additional District Administrator (General) Ayesha Akhter, and Sunamganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sultana Jerin. Rangarchar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Hai, District Monitoring Committee member Muhammad Aminul Haque, and media representatives were also present.
