Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted the necessity of fostering mutual understanding among the country's political parties to prevent bitterness and political discord. Speaking at a discussion organized by Jatiya Press Club (JPC) to commemorate the first anniversary of the July-August mass uprising, Fakhrul emphasized the importance of unity among political entities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event honored several prominent editors, including Jai Jain Din Editor Shafik Rehman, Manab Zamin Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, and former editor of daily Sangram, Abul Asad. Special honors were also bestowed upon BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain. Additionally, family members of two martyrs from the July-August Revolution were recognized for their sacrifices.
During the event, Fakhrul inaugurated a photo exhibition highlighting the oppression and torture of journalists by the Awami League government over the past 15 years and during the July uprising. A video presentation on the July uprising was also showcased.
Fakhrul noted the positive political consensus on 12 fundamental state reform issues, despite existing disagreements. He asserted that a new opportunity has emerged to construct a democratic Bangladesh, where everyone should have the right to express their opinions and receive a fair trial.
Furthermore, Fakhrul discussed the global decline of liberal democracy and the challenges posed by changing mindsets due to technological advancements. He highlighted the differences in political structures between countries like China and the United States and Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for adaptation in political frameworks.
Reflecting on history, Fakhrul remarked on Bangladesh's journey from British to Pakistani rule, and the ongoing challenges faced in achieving true freedom. He called for the development of a free society and state, urging a broader perspective beyond historical constraints.
The event, chaired by Jatiya Press Club President Hasan Hafiz and moderated by General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, was attended by various media professionals and family members of the revolution's martyrs.
