Luxmipur: Police today arrested former vice-president of Luxmipur Zila Chhatra League, Maruf Hossain Sujan, for his alleged involvement in the killing of three students in the town on August 4 last. Md Abdul Monnaf, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Thana, stated that Sujan has been accused in the killing of three students and an explosive substances act. Sujan, son of Nur Mohhammad Chowdhury of Kamankhola area, was also the president of Dalal Bazar union Chhatra League. He was produced before the court and later, sent to jail, the OC said. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, three students - Saad Al Afnan, Osman Gani, and Sabbir Hossain - were killed in indiscriminate firing reportedly by the cadres of Awami League, Juba League, and Chhatra League near Jhumur Chattar area of the town. The attack occurred when several hundred students, along with the deceased, joined a large rally of the anti-discrimination student movement. The Awami League, Juba League, and Chhatra League cadres, under the leadership of former president of Zila Juba League and recently sacked Sadar Upazila chairman AKM Salauddin Tipu, opened indiscriminate firing towards the students. As a result, Saad Al Afnan, Osman Gani, and Sabbir Hossain died on the spot, and over 500 people, including nearly 300 students, were injured in the attack. Three separate murder cases were later lodged with local police in this connection, and police also filed another case against the attackers under the explosive substances act.
