Narail: Erosions have taken a serious turn in Narail as major rivers are overflowing due to incessant rains during the rainy season. Avijit Kumar Saha, executive engineer of the district water development board (WDB), told BSS that 'River bank erosion is a common phenomenon as the Narail districts witnessed the disaster every year due to rising water levels of Madhumati, Nabaganga, and Chitra.'
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the water development board is actively taking initiatives to prevent riverbank erosion in the district. Efforts include dumping GEO bags in the rivers to counteract the strong currents, which is expected to help stop the erosion. Additionally, the WDB has commenced official procedures for constructing embankments in the district to avert further erosion.
Residents of Uthali village, including Panna Sheikh and Mannu Sheikh, reported significant damage over the past one and a half months. Houses, infrastructures, playgrounds, and trees have been devoured in the areas adjacent to the three major rivers Madhumati, Nabaganga, and Chitra. Crops on vast tracts of the district have also been severely damaged due to the erosions.
People in the Narail district have expressed concerns that riverbank erosion may damage their houses, business establishments, and other properties. They have urged the authorities to take prompt measures to protect risky areas from erosion.
