Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has announced that the Election Commission (EC) will implement reforms that fall within its jurisdiction, while politically sensitive reforms will be managed by the National Consensus Commission. “Some reforms require political consensus and are beyond the EC’s authority. Such matters will be handled by the National Consensus Commission,” stated Nasir Uddin.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CEC was addressing journalists following a meeting with newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Susan Ryle, at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon. The discussions covered preparations for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, progress on electoral reforms, and potential support from Australia.
During the meeting, Nasir Uddin detailed ongoing reforms, including updating the voter list, delimiting parliamentary constituencies, and amending the electoral code of conduct. “They inquired about our preparations for the next parliamentary election. We informed them about the ongoing reforms. They assured us of all possible support if we seek assistance,” he noted.
He further explained, “We have completed the voter list. We also briefed them on the initiative to redraw boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies.” Additionally, the CEC mentioned extending the political party registration deadline and amending the electoral code of conduct, highlighting these steps to the Australian High Commissioner.
Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle commended the discussion, describing it as ‘highly productive’ and reiterated Australia’s commitment to supporting a free, fair, and transparent election process in Bangladesh. “Bangladesh is moving towards open and credible elections, and Australia stands ready to assist wherever possible,” she affirmed.
