DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has unveiled a draft of the updated voter list, which includes 1,833,352 new voters, significantly altering the electoral landscape. This update brings the total number of registered voters in the country to 123,683,512.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the newly added voters consist of 1,185,516 male voters, 647,774 female voters, and 62 voters from the hijra community. With these additions, the current voter demographics are 63,330,103 male voters, 60,352,415 female voters, and 994 from the third-gender or hijra community.
In a press briefing at the EC office, Election Commissioner Brig Gen Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah provided details of the updated statistics. He stated that the final voter list is scheduled for publication on March 2, 2025, following the resolution of any claims and objections. The process of collecting voter information, conducted door-to-door, commenced on January 20 and is expected to conclude by June 30.
Sanaullah also indicated that if the national election is held before the completion of this process, the commission may consider changing the law through an ordinance to accommodate the situation.
