Dhaka: Sarba Mitra Chakma, a member of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), compelled about thirty outsiders, primarily teenagers and young adults, to hold their ears as punishment for playing on the university’s central field.

According to United News of Bangladesh, a video of the incident surfaced on social media on Sunday, leading to widespread criticism on various platforms. The footage depicts a row of approximately 30 youths, aged between 10 and 20, performing ear-holding squats on one side of the central field, with Sarba Mitra Chakma standing before them wielding a stick. Reports suggest the video was recorded in January around 6 PM at the Dhaka University central field.

Despite repeated prohibitions by the university administration against outsiders playing on the field, teenagers and young men from nearby areas often visit the grounds. In defense of his actions, DUCSU member Sarba Mitra Chakma stated that outsiders frequently cause disturbances, including throwing stones and stealing wallets and mobile phones from students, prompting repeated warnings.

Chakma attributed some blame to the university administration, particularly the Treasurer, for not approving a boundary wall to prevent such intrusions. He confirmed that he ordered the punishment, claiming it was necessary due to the lack of a sustainable solution to the recurring issue.

In response, Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed commented that he was unaware of the video but emphasized the need for adhering to regulations for any activities on university grounds. Regarding the authority of a DUCSU member to impose such punishment, he stated he would need to discuss the matter further with the member involved.
