Dhaka: Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasized the need for state reform while also highlighting the importance of supporting the families of those martyred and injured during the July-August mass uprising. He stressed the need for their proper evaluation to honor their sacrifices.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Khan made these remarks at a memorial discussion held at the Independence Memorial Square of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Sunday afternoon. The event was organized to honor the martyrs and injured of the July Revolution, with Professor Khan serving as the chief guest.
Vice-Chancellor of BRUR, Professor Dr. Md Showkat Ali, presided over the memorial discussion, which concluded with a vibrant cultural function. The DU VC expressed optimism about developing a strong relationship in the future through collaborative research and academic activities between DU and BRUR faculties and students.
Dr. Abdullah-al-Mamun, a social an
d political analyst and DU teacher, spoke as the main discussant, highlighting societal inequality due to stagnant development over the past 15 years. He pointed out that Rangpur division has also suffered from this inequality and urged students to remain vigilant against conspiracies affecting the country.
BRUR Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Showkat Ali emphasized the urgent need for the rehabilitation of the families affected by the July Revolution. He mentioned efforts to present their situation to the interim government and announced plans to establish a Martyrs’ Memorial Corner at BRUR to commemorate the sacrifices made during the uprising.
Dr. Md Ileas Pramanik, BRUR Director of the Office of Student Affairs and convener of the organizing committee for the memorial discussion, along with relatives of martyred students and injured individuals from BRUR, also addressed the gathering.
Following the discussion, a cultural program was held in the evening, and the DU VC planted a sapling on the campus to
commemorate the day. Earlier, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan paid respects at the grave of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of BRUR’s English Department who was killed in the anti-discrimination student movement on July 16, in Babanpur village of Pirganj upazila.
The BRUR Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Proctor, Student Advisor, teachers, and officials were present during the visit.
