Feni: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo emphasized the government’s unwavering stance against drug dealers and extortionists, stating that there will be no leniency and a zero-tolerance policy is in place against drugs, extortion, and juvenile gangs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Mintoo made these remarks during a district law and order committee meeting at the Feni Deputy Commissioner’s office. He reiterated the need for identifying and arresting drug addicts and dealers through proper drives, highlighting drugs as a major societal issue. The minister also addressed the issue of juvenile gangs, asserting that the government’s zero-tolerance policy mandates bringing those involved to justice.
In addressing the problem of hawkers occupying city footpaths, Mintoo pointed out that hawkers often operate after paying extortion money, thus necessitating the arrest of the extortionists. He announced the government’s plan to launch a special drive, akin to ‘Operation Clean Heart,’ within the next two to three months to ensure offenders are brought under the law.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Monira Haque and moderated by Assistant Commissioner Chayan Barua, featured several other notable speakers including Superintendent of Police Md Shafiqul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. Rubaiyat Bin Karim, and Camp Commander of Bangladesh Army Lt Col Md Amanul Haque. Deputy Commissioner Monira Haque discussed various initiatives to maintain law and order, such as market monitoring and mobile courts to control commodity prices during Ramadan and prevent illegal fuel oil hoarding.
Superintendent of Police Md Shafiqul Islam noted that the law and order situation in the district has improved, referencing the stability following the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, and the establishment of a new government through fair elections. He also mentioned ongoing police initiatives to ensure safety during Eid.
Earlier, Minister Mintoo was welcomed at the circuit house by the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police. Responding to journalists’ questions, he mentioned the government’s extensive initiatives for environmental improvement and afforestation, and a special 180-day plan to combat pollution. Addressing past project irregularities, Mintoo assured that no scope for irregularities or corruption will exist during the current administration.
Later in the day, the minister is expected to engage with Sonagazi upazila administration officials and attend an iftar mahfil organized by the upazila BNP unit.
