Dhaka: Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna today to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Bangladesh, particularly focusing on the country's port and logistics infrastructure. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral trade relations and enhance economic collaboration between Bangladesh and the UAE.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this dialogue follows an earlier conversation between the two leaders at Davos, where DP World's chief expressed interest in investing in the New Mooring Container Terminal in Chittagong. The proposed investment aims to alleviate congestion at Chittagong Port, reduce carbon emissions, and significantly improve the efficiency of Bangladesh's primary maritime gateway.
"This is a land of opportunities," stated Chief Adviser Prof Yunus, encouraging DP World to invest in Bangladesh. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem reaffirmed his company's commitment, emphasizing a shared vision for prosperity that includes improving trade routes from Chittagong to Dubai and extending to Africa.
Chief Adviser Prof Yunus also encouraged DP World to explore broader collaboration in Bangladesh's expanding sectors, such as fisheries, agro-processing, and halal meat exports. He stressed the importance of skills development for Bangladeshi workers, a sentiment echoed by DP World's chief, who noted the UAE's active efforts in facilitating visas and support for skilled workers from Bangladesh.
Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem revealed plans to launch a "Bangladesh Mart" in the UAE, modeled after their successful Chinese and Indian trade marts. The initiative aims to showcase Bangladeshi products such as wood, marble, and agricultural goods on a global stage.
Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfey Siddiqi remarked on ongoing efforts to resolve visa issues for general Bangladeshi citizens, expressing optimism for a forthcoming solution. The meeting also highlighted recent recruitment efforts by two UAE companies, which have employed nearly 500 workers from Bangladesh.
DP World, a renowned global logistics company based in Dubai, is recognized for its expertise in port development, maritime services, logistics, and technology-driven trade facilitation. SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed was also present at this significant meeting.
