Dhaka: The Directorate of Environment (DOE) today requested all concerned not to use one-time use plastic and polythene during the Eid journey by launch. The DOE also urged the passengers of the launches to keep the food and other wastages to the bins kept at the launch deck instead of throwing it into the river. The mobile court of the DOE also urged the supervisors and other staff of launches to take necessary steps to this end.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a mobile court led by an executive magistrate from the monitoring and enforcement wing of the DOE conducted a massive drive at Sadarghat Launch Terminal from 9 pm to midnight on Friday in this regard. The executive magistrate, with the assistance of the River Police, inspected all the launches to observe the overall condition of launches, including plastic, polythene, and waste management.
The magistrate instructed the launch authorities to set up bins and asked the river police personnel to monitor their usage. Police also urged the people through loudspeakers to be careful about the consequences of misuse of plastic and polythene bags. Besides, the DOE disconnected the electric line of a small factory handling waste batteries in the Konabari area and sealed it off. Such operations by the DOE are set to continue.
