Dhaka:Dhaka University (DU) will observe its Mourning Day on October 15 in remembrance of the victims of the tragic accident that occurred at Jagannath Hall on the night of October 15, 1985.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the accident resulted in the loss of 40 lives, including 26 students and 14 guests and employees, with many others injured. The day is annually observed to honor the memory of the deceased students, employees, and guests.
On this day, all classes and administrative activities at the university will be suspended. The day's events will begin at 6:00 am with the hoisting of black flags atop all main buildings, halls, and hostels of the university, flying the university flag at half-mast, and wearing black badges.
At 7:30 am, a mourning rally led by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam will commence from the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla and proceed to the Jagannath Hall Memorial, where wreaths will be placed, followed by a minute of silence.
A discussion meeting is scheduled for 8:00 am at the TV Room of the October Memorial Building. Special prayers for followers of Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian faiths will be conducted at the Jagannath Hall premises from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.
Furthermore, special prayers (Doa) seeking peace for the departed souls will be offered at the university central mosque, Masjidul Jami'a, and hall mosques after Asr prayers.
An exhibition showcasing oil paintings and documents related to the deceased will be held at Jagannath Hall from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, organized by the hall administration.
