Dhaka: BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic practices to prevent the rise of dictatorial forces, asserting that such practices safeguard the populace from subjugation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizvi conveyed these sentiments in a message on the eve of International Democracy Day. He highlighted the day's significance in fostering interest in democracy and strengthening the rule of law, freedom of expression, civil rights, human rights, and accountable institutions. Rizvi expressed deep respect for those who sacrificed their lives in Bangladesh and globally in the pursuit of democracy, offering prayers for their eternal peace and sympathies to the injured.
Rizvi underscored the day's importance in protecting human rights, asserting that democracy ensures the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. He emphasized that elected representatives are committed to serving the people and securing their rightful entitlements. He reiterated that the continuation of democratic practices prevents the emergence of dictatorial regimes and safeguards the populace from being turned into slaves.
The message also highlighted the lingering presence of autocratic governance in various countries, noting that Bangladesh endured a repressive Awami regime for over a decade, which curtailed civil liberties, voting rights, dignity, and human rights. Rizvi accused the regime of suppressing press freedom and committing extrajudicial acts, including enforced disappearances and killings.
He recounted the struggle for democracy, mentioning the imprisonment of the late Begum Khaleda Zia, a relentless advocate for democracy, and the persecution faced by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Rizvi recalled the 16-year oppressive period endured by the people, culminating in the historic anti-autocracy movement of July-August 2024, which led to the regime's downfall.
Rizvi celebrated the formation of a true democratic government following the free and fair elections of February 12, urging for the strengthening of the current democratic system. He called for the perpetuation of neutral elections and emphasized the necessity of universal education, social justice, and the rule of law to achieve true democracy.
He concluded by acknowledging the challenging journey toward democracy and urged collective efforts to establish an effective democratic state.
