Chattogram: The Chattogram District Police has embarked on an initiative to establish a detailed database of foreign nationals living in Chattogram. Data is being collected concerning the number of foreigners in particular regions, the legality of their residency, and any potential criminal histories. In light of the recent apprehension of a group of illegal foreigners in the Khulshi area of the city, monitoring of the presence and activities of foreigners has been intensified across various locations in the district, including Sitakunda, Anwara, and Jorarganj.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Masud Alam shared this information during a press conference at the Chattogram District SP office on Monday afternoon, September 14. The SP noted that foreign investors and workers are involved in numerous projects throughout the commercial hub of Chattogram. 'Although the police already maintain a list of foreigners who are legally residing in the area, surveillance has been escalated following the recent arrest of 25 illegal foreign nationals in Khulshi on charges related to fraud,' he added.
He indicated that the activities and presence of foreigners in regions such as Sitakunda, Anwara, and Jorarganj are under close observation. Efforts are being made to accurately determine the number of foreigners currently in the district, their specific locations, and whether any have criminal records. The SP further mentioned that the District Special Branch (DSB) is actively working to fill the long-standing data gap concerning illegal foreigners since the time of independence.
Work is ongoing to compile a thorough database by collecting information on the locations, identities, and criminal backgrounds of these foreign nationals.
