Chattogram: Chattogram Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) is set to resume production following the restoration of gas supply. As ammonia production resumed on September 9, the factory management said urea production would begin shortly after the necessary repairs are completed.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, S.M. Abdullah Al Mamun, General Manager (Commercial) of the factory, stated, "The factory has been receiving the necessary gas supply for more than a week. The ammonia plant is now operational." Liquid ammonia and carbon dioxide serve as the two essential raw materials for urea production. The restoration of the gas supply has enabled ammonia production; however, repairs to the mechanical faults in the urea plant are required before it can be operational. Despite the initial target to commence urea production on September 12, this has not been feasible.
Efforts are currently underway to resolve the mechanical problems. If everything goes as planned, urea production could resume shortly, he said. He mentioned that under optimal conditions, CUFL is capable of producing 1,000 tonnes of urea per day. Therefore, once production resumes, the factory could significantly contribute to the country's fertilizer supply.
Meanwhile, an official of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) noted that, following government directives, priority is being given to supplying gas to fertilizer and power generation plants.
