Dhaka: Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder today announced that the nation has achieved its highest-ever food stock levels, with reserves surpassing 20.27 lakh metric tonnes. This significant milestone was revealed during a press conference held at his ministry office in the Secretariat.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Majumder highlighted that the current food stock as of January 1 is the highest recorded in the past five years. The breakdown of the stock includes approximately 16,96,787 metric tonnes of rice, 2,33,224 metric tonnes of wheat, and 97,409 metric tonnes of paddy. He pointed out that previous records were 18.81 lakh metric tonnes in 2022, followed by 18.02 lakh metric tonnes in 2023, 7.26 lakh metric tonnes in 2021, 15.52 lakh metric tonnes in 2024, and 11.44 lakh metric tonnes in 2025.

The adviser attributed this achievement to the surplus stock and efficient procurement strategies set by the Food Monitoring Committee. The committee initially set procurement targets at 500 metric tonnes of paddy, 6 lakh metric tonnes of parboiled rice, and 57,000 metric tonnes of atap (unpolished) rice. The government has already exceeded these targets, procuring around 1.31 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, 7.32 lakh metric tonnes of parboiled rice, and 57,596 metric tonnes of atap rice.

Majumder expressed confidence in the nation’s food security, stating that the situation is stable. He mentioned that if the upcoming boro harvest yields above-average results, food security would remain robust for the year. Furthermore, he assured that the government-run public food distribution system is operationally sound, with all associated programmes being successfully implemented.
