Dhaka: Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on Monday emphasized the necessity of amending the Constitution to realign Bangladesh’s democratic journey. He stated that there is no alternative to these amendments for the benefit of the people, highlighting changes made by previous governments for their own gain.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Chief Whip Moni expressed that the existing Constitution cannot be repealed but should be altered through discussions with all political parties. Despite holding a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the current government aims for a collective decision-making process to ensure inclusivity. Moni emphasized that the interests of Bangladesh take precedence for the current administration.

Moni also noted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supports the implementation of the July National Charter. He expressed a desire to engage in discussions with all parties regarding the implementation methods of agreed-upon elements.

The meeting between Chief Whip Moni and US Embassy Political Officer James A Stewart also covered topics such as Bangladesh’s democratic journey, the method of constitutional amendments, and the government’s role in fostering an effective Parliament. Moni shared that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is committed to fostering political harmony and a democratic environment, evidenced by initiatives like proposing a deputy speaker from the opposition.

James A Stewart commended the government’s initiatives, including waiving agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000, distributing family cards, and efforts towards political stability.
