Dhaka: Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam has announced ongoing efforts to classify ‘battlefield freedom fighters (FFs)’ and ‘associate FFs’ to remove fake names from the official list, thus ensuring the dignity of genuine freedom fighters.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azam revealed that complaints regarding 90,000 fake freedom fighters have been received from various districts, with data entry completed for 40,000 of these cases. The classification work continues for the remaining 50,000 entries. Azam, a decorated war hero who received the ‘Bir Pratik’ gallantry award for his role in the 1971 Liberation War, shared these insights during an interview with BSS.

Azam explained that frontline fighters against the Pakistani forces from March 26 to December 16, 1971, will be recognized as battlefield freedom fighters. Meanwhile, individuals already on the FF list, including those who mobilized public opinion internationally, such as members of the Swadhin Bangla football team, artists, journalists, and medical professionals, are being considered as associate freedom fighters.

The adviser highlighted the distinction between those who fought on the frontlines and those who contributed differently, emphasizing the need for proper classification. Efforts are being made to identify and recognize other freedom fighters who did not engage directly in battlefield combat.

Azam also addressed the political exploitation of the Liberation War, mentioning that even minors at the time of the conflict have been mistakenly added to the FF list for political reasons. He urged those with fake FF status to voluntarily withdraw their names and stated that no punitive measures would be taken against them if they comply. However, accused individuals will be required to provide documentation to prove their status; failure to do so will result in punitive actions.

The adviser expressed hope that the issue would be resolved with the formation of the Muktijoddha Sangsad, aiming to finalize a list of authentic battlefield freedom fighters. He stressed the importance of upholding the spirit of the Liberation War and protecting the dignity of genuine freedom fighters.

Azam also pointed out discrepancies in the support provided to families of martyrs, noting that 1,399 families are not receiving the benefits they are entitled to. He called for efforts to locate these families and ensure they receive their due allowances.

Reflecting on his experiences during the Liberation War, Azam recounted his journey from a young man driven by conscience to a participant in naval guerrilla operations. He shared memories of pivotal moments, such as hearing Major Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence and undergoing training for naval warfare.

Azam concluded by expressing a continued struggle against discrimination and an ongoing effort to realize the dreams of the Liberation War. He acknowledged the work of the interim government following the 2024 July Uprising in striving to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
