New york: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today departed for home, concluding his nine-day visit to the United States. A commercial flight of Emirates airline carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage left John F Kennedy International Airport at 11:10 pm (NY time). Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury and Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Tareq Md Ariful Islam were present at the airport to see him off, as reported by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abdul Kalam Azad Majumder.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during his visit, Prof Yunus delivered a speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26. He also spoke at the ‘Opening Session of the High-Level Conference on the Situation of the Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar’ at the United Nations Headquarters on September 30. On September 29, he met with United Nations Secretary General Ant³nio Guterres. Additionally, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited Prof Yunus at his hotel in New York. Rabab Fatima, the UN Under Secretary General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, also held discussions with him.
During his stay in New York, Prof Yunus attended a reception hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, where he extended an invitation to President Trump to visit Bangladesh at his convenience. The Chief Adviser also engaged in bilateral meetings with leaders from several countries, including the Netherlands, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Kosovo. He is expected to return home on October 2.
