Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today highlighted the long-standing deprivation of voting rights experienced by the countrymen during the Awami League regime. Speaking at the Independence Award-2025 ceremony held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium, he remarked on the failure to establish a just society in independent Bangladesh, emphasizing the nation’s struggle with corruption and enforced disappearances during that period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus also commemorated the tragic events of March 25, 1971, when the Pakistani occupation forces brutally attacked unarmed Bengalees, leading to the deaths of thousands. He recalled the subsequent armed resistance that culminated in Bangladesh’s independence after a nine-month war. Prof Yunus paid tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters who played crucial roles in the war of independence.
The chief adviser reiterated the war’s aim to create a society founded on justice, rule of law, and human rights while eliminating discrimination. He also remembered those who sacrificed during the July Uprising, vowing not to let their efforts go in vain as the nation aspires to build a New Bangladesh.
