Shailkupa: State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad emphasized the critical need for canal excavation and restoration to protect Bangladesh and ensure the survival of its farmers. He asserted that these measures are essential for maintaining adequate water supply for irrigation and safeguarding the country from droughts, recalling the successful canal excavation program initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman from 1977 to 1980.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister shared these remarks while delivering a special guest speech at the inauguration of a canal excavation program in Char Dholharachandra village under Shailkupa upazila. He highlighted that the initiative, part of an election manifesto pledge by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, aims to revive rivers, canals, and water bodies across the nation. He criticized the previous regime for neglecting these vital water resources, which were either leased out or misused for cultivation and other purposes.
The state minister also underscored the importance of ecological protection, pointing out that deforestation has altered biodiversity and groundwater levels. He reiterated the election promise to plant 250 million trees nationwide to restore lost tree cover, with trees to be planted alongside excavated canals.
He highlighted that the excavation process will not only use dredgers but will also engage male and female workers, providing employment opportunities. He stressed a zero-tolerance policy against irregularities in the process, seeking public cooperation to ensure compliance.
The event was attended by Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman as the chief guest, along with Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud, Zila Parishad Administrator Abdul Majid, Superintendent of Police Mahfuz Afzal, and various district and upazila officials, as well as BNP leaders.
