Dhaka: The Cabinet has approved the draft of the Special Response Battalion Act, 2026, which proposes the replacement of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) with a new specialized unit called the Special Response Battalion (SRB) under the police force.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Cabinet has given its final approval to the draft law, which is subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division. This decision was made during the weekly cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The draft law, introduced by the Home Affairs Ministry, includes a proposal for the formation of a Multi-party Grievance Redress Committee. This committee is intended to address complaints from citizens as well as internal grievances from members of the SRB.
The proposed legislation stipulates that all manpower, authority, facilities, funds, property, accounts, records, and other relevant assets associated with RAB will be transferred to the SRB. Furthermore, it ensures that until new regulations are established, the existing rules governing departmental proceedings related to RAB will remain in effect with necessary adaptations.
