Tokyo: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today announced that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has informed Japan of a ‘cut-off timeframe’ for the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh. The elections are scheduled to occur between December 2025 and June 2026.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during a meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister and Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League President Taro Aso on the first day of his Japan tour, Prof Yunus discussed Bangladesh’s next polls. Alam emphasized that Prof Yunus has defined a six-month period for the election, which will be conducted within this timeframe.

The press secretary stated that Prof Yunus will announce a specific election date as soon as all necessary preparations are complete. The meeting took place at the bilateral meeting room of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

Alam added that the June deadline serves as a roadmap, with Prof Yunus clearly stating he will not extend his power beyond this period. The interim government is actively working on various fronts, including economic, administrative, and legal reforms. The Election Commission’s work is progressing steadily.

Regarding political agreement, Alam mentioned that Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Prof Ali Riaz, has identified areas for political parties to agree upon. The Commission plans to commence its second round of discussions in early June, with hopes of reaching a consensus on reforms by July.

The Chief Adviser is focusing on three main agendas: reform, trial of fascist elements, and the election. Prof Yunus will announce a specific date for the elections once all preparations are finalized.
